Why You Should Start Your Own Memorial While You're Still Alive

Every memorial platform in existence operates on the same assumption: someone has already died.

You die. Then someone who loved you scrambles to assemble something — a biography from old emails, memories pieced together at the worst possible time, photos that may or may not capture who you actually were. The result is always incomplete. It's always filtered through grief and haste. It's almost never in your words.

There's a better way.

What a Living Memorial Is

A living memorial is a biographical record you build while you're alive. Not a will, not a medical directive — a life document. The places you've been. The people who matter. The things you want people to know about you when you're gone (and, frankly, when you're still here).

It's not morbid. It's the opposite. It's what happens when you take your own story seriously enough to tell it on your own terms.

What You Include

The basics: name, birth year, where you grew up, where you've lived. These are the anchors.

The story: What you've done. Who you've loved. What you believe. What you've survived. What you're proud of.

The character detail: The thing that makes you recognizable to anyone who knows you. "Known for his terrible dad jokes and his exceptional brisket." One sentence that sounds like you.

The places: The cities, the houses, the landmarks that shaped you. The lake where you learned to fish. The city where you spent your twenties.

The people: Your family, your close friends, your mentors. People who don't have profiles yet can be listed by name.

Why Now Is the Right Time

Because you know the details better than anyone. Because the people who will assemble this after you're gone will be grieving and rushed and working from incomplete information. Because your great-grandchildren will want to know who you were, and they're not born yet.

There's no emergency. You can build this slowly, over years, adding things as they occur to you. The profile doesn't have to be complete — it just has to start.

The Flame

On Eternaflame, living profiles are marked with a small flame (🔥) next to the name. No label, no explanation — just a signal that this person is here, actively adding to their record, telling their story while they still can.

When they pass, the flame is removed. The dates are added. The profile continues.
